(Continued from above) 2. THE PROBLEMS OF FAN CULTURE: Tied to the first reason is your perfect takedown of the terrifying mass we call the Internet. I’ve seen so many YouTubers fall down this same trap—nothing is ever enough. It’s ALWAYS “more, more, more!” Even on this site, people (myself include) love to comment “What’s the next chapter?” We are a generation used to instant gratification—and the threat of “We can watch someone else unless you give us more” is very real to these people trying to make a living off of their fame. Every prank, every song, every sexy shot...it’s never enough. More, more, more. And yet... 3. THE FETISHIZATION OF STRAIGHT MEN: I love the turn where gay men start turning on John for “acting gay,” despite demanding he enhance his ass and act stereotypically “gayer” earlier. It’s another comment on the fickleness of viewers: they want it THEIR way, and they don’t want actual gay men—just the appearance of them. It reduces models to fetishes and puppets, designed to play a game where they have no control and are forced to follow the whims of a crowd with zero attention span. And the continued fetishization of straight men to APPEAR gay, but not actually BE gay, is a psychological riddle about both the gay and straight communities that could take up a whole book—and this story captures the struggle perfectly.

Dear Blightcaller, I’ve read many stories on this site. Some get me hard; some make me cry; some make me happy. But none—NONE—has EVER made me think the way this amazing story does! There is SO MUCH to read here, and you paint such an incredibly vivid picture. If you don’t mind, I’d love to share my thoughts about three particularly strong points in this and my next comment. Thank you! 1. THE CRITIQUE OF THE INTERNET: The way you describe John’s rise to fame and eventual destruction is a perfect crystallization of the unique problems of the Internet age. Sure, in the past, “anybody” could write a book or become a movie star, but we live in an era where top-quality videos are easy to film on phones. Like the modeling agency woman says, there are SO MANY up and coming people, and it leads to a feeling of treating those models like toys—shiny things to play with for a while, then get bored of.
